Operating Principle

Electric-field intensity is normally highest near the energized metal fitting of a high-voltage insulator. Sharp edges, small radii and abrupt changes in geometry can further increase local electrical stress.

The grading ring increases the effective curvature radius of the energized assembly and distributes the electric field over a larger area. When correctly positioned, this can reduce peak field strength around the end fitting and nearby insulating material.

The required ring geometry cannot be determined from system voltage alone. Insulator length, shed profile, end-fitting structure, conductor arrangement, tower geometry, altitude and environmental conditions must also be considered.

Materials and Construction

The circular ring is generally manufactured from conductive metal tube with a smooth external surface. Aluminum-alloy construction provides low weight and good electrical conductivity, while galvanized-steel construction provides high mechanical rigidity and corrosion protection.
