Galvanized U-Bolt Wire Rope Clip for Guy Wire Termination

The galvanized U-bolt wire rope clip is designed for forming eyes and securing the dead end of steel wire rope or guy wire. It consists of a U-bolt, saddle and two hex nuts, providing a removable mechanical connection for overhead distribution-line guying systems, utility poles and general static wire-rope assemblies. Carbon-steel or malleable-iron versions are available with zinc-plated or hot-dip galvanized surface protection.

Galvanized U-Bolt Wire Rope Clip for Guy Wire Termination

The galvanized U-bolt wire rope clip is used to form an eye or secure the dead end of a steel wire rope, guy wire or compatible steel strand. It consists of a threaded U-bolt, a grooved saddle and two hex nuts. Tightening the nuts clamps the rope between the U-bolt and saddle to create a removable mechanical termination.

This type of wire rope clip is commonly used in overhead distribution-line guying systems, utility poles, telecommunications poles, fencing, static support cables and general industrial wire-rope assemblies. The clip size must match the actual rope diameter and the required number of clips, spacing and tightening torque must follow the approved installation specification.

Important: Light-duty DIN 741-style clips and heavy-duty forged wire rope clips are different products. Material, dimensions, working load and applicable standard must be confirmed before ordering. A light-duty clip must not be advertised or used as lifting hardware unless the exact model has been designed, tested and certified for that application.

The size range above is representative. Final dimensions, nut size, tightening torque, clip quantity and rated performance must be confirmed from the approved drawing and test data.

Materials

Light-duty DIN 741-style wire rope clips commonly use a carbon-steel U-bolt with a malleable cast-iron saddle and carbon-steel nuts. Heavy-duty versions may use a drop-forged carbon-steel saddle and forged or formed steel U-bolt for increased mechanical performance.

The material grade must be selected according to the required rope diameter, environmental conditions and mechanical load. Material certificates can be supplied when specified in the purchase contract.

Surface Treatment

Zinc-Plated Finish

Zinc-plated clips have a bright and relatively smooth surface. They are suitable for general indoor use and mildly corrosive environments. The plating type and thickness must be confirmed before ordering.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Finish

Hot-dip galvanizing provides a thicker zinc coating for outdoor utility, pole-line and infrastructure applications. Coating requirements may be specified according to ISO 1461, ASTM A153/A153M or the applicable customer standard.

The product photograph alone cannot confirm whether the finish is zinc plated or hot-dip galvanized. The selected coating must be stated in the product model and purchase order.

Applications

  • Overhead distribution-line guy wires
  • Utility-pole and telecommunications-pole guying systems
  • Steel wire-rope eye terminations
  • Static support and tensioning cables
  • Fencing and agricultural support systems
  • General industrial cable-securing assemblies

Installation Guidance

  1. Select a clip matching the actual wire-rope diameter.
  2. Form the required rope eye around a suitable thimble when specified.
  3. Place the U-bolt over the dead end of the rope.
  4. Place the live, load-bearing section of the rope in the saddle.
  5. Install all clips in the same orientation; do not alternate their direction.
  6. Use the specified number of clips and the required center-to-center spacing.
  7. Tighten both nuts evenly to the manufacturer’s specified torque.
  8. Apply the initial load, then inspect and retighten the nuts when required.
  9. Inspect the assembly periodically for loose nuts, corrosion, deformation or rope damage.

Installation rule: The U-bolt must be placed on the dead end and the saddle must support the live end of the rope. Incorrect orientation can damage the load-bearing section and reduce the efficiency of the termination.

Quality Inspection

  • Material and dimensional inspection
  • Thread fit and nut-assembly inspection
  • Visual inspection for cracks, sharp edges and casting or forging defects
  • Zinc-coating appearance and thickness inspection when specified
  • Mechanical or termination-efficiency testing according to the agreed standard
  • Marking, quantity and packaging inspection

Reference Standards

  • EN 13411-5 – U-bolt wire rope grips for steel wire-rope terminations
  • DIN 741 – Common dimensional pattern for light-duty wire rope clips
  • ASME B30.26 – Rigging hardware, when applicable to a tested heavy-duty product
  • ISO 1461:2022 – Hot-dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles
  • ASTM A153/A153M – Hot-dip zinc coating on iron and steel hardware
  • Customer drawings and utility project specifications

Reference to a standard does not constitute certification. Compliance must be supported by the inspection and test documentation for the exact product model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this clip suitable for overhead-line guy wire?

It can be used in guy-wire termination assemblies when its size, material, coating, number of clips and mechanical capacity meet the approved pole-line design.

Can one clip secure a wire-rope eye?

The required number depends on the rope diameter, clip design and applicable standard. Do not assume that one clip is sufficient.

Can this product be used for lifting?

Not unless the exact clip is manufactured, tested, marked and approved for the intended lifting application. General-purpose or DIN 741-style light-duty clips should not be presented as certified lifting hardware.

What is the difference between zinc plating and hot-dip galvanizing?

Zinc plating normally creates a thinner and smoother coating, while hot-dip galvanizing provides a thicker protective zinc layer that is generally preferred for outdoor utility environments.
