Preformed Conductor Dead-End Clamp for Overhead Lines

The preformed conductor dead-end clamp provides a secure mechanical termination for bare stranded conductors on overhead power lines. Its matched helical rods wrap around the conductor to distribute gripping force over an extended contact area, reducing concentrated stress and conductor damage. Models are available for ACSR, AAC and AAAC conductors, with conductor diameter, lay direction, rated strength and connection hardware selected according to the approved line design.

Preformed Conductor Dead-End Clamp for Overhead Lines

The preformed conductor dead-end clamp is a helical gripping fitting designed to terminate and anchor bare stranded conductors at tension poles, angle structures and overhead-line dead-end points. The preformed rods are manufactured to match the diameter, material and strand direction of the specified conductor.

During installation, the helically formed rods are wrapped around the conductor. Their distributed contact transfers mechanical tension over an extended gripping length instead of concentrating the load at a small bolted contact point. This helps protect the conductor strands while providing a stable mechanical termination.

The complete assembly may include preformed gripping rods, reinforcing rods, a thimble or loop, clevis hardware, bolts, nuts, washers and locking pins. The exact configuration depends on the conductor type, required mechanical strength and structure connection.

Important: A preformed dead-end must be selected for the exact conductor designation and outside diameter. Products for ACSR, AAC, AAAC, steel strand and insulated conductors are not automatically interchangeable.

Technical values must be confirmed using the conductor data sheet, approved product drawing and mechanical test report. The product must not be selected by conductor diameter alone when conductor construction or rated tensile strength differs.

Working Principle

The preformed rods are manufactured with a helical diameter slightly smaller than the specified conductor. When wrapped onto the conductor, the rods generate controlled radial gripping pressure and distribute axial tension along the contact length.

The termination load is transferred from the conductor through the helical grip and thimble or connection loop into the associated clevis, shackle, insulator string or supporting structure.

Available Configurations

Standard Preformed Dead-End

A one-layer helical grip for conductors and applications covered by the approved design. The product is supplied as a matched set and normally includes an identification mark.

Dead-End with Reinforcing Rods

An additional layer of reinforcing rods may be used when greater conductor protection, mechanical performance or compatibility with a particular conductor construction is required.

Dead-End Assembly with Connection Hardware

The helical grip may be supplied with a thimble, clevis, shackle, bolts, nuts and locking pins. The quotation and packing list must identify every included component.

Material and Surface Protection

The material of the helical rods must be compatible with the conductor. Depending on the application, the rods may be manufactured from aluminum-clad steel, aluminum alloy or galvanized steel. Incompatible materials may cause accelerated corrosion or unsuitable gripping performance.

Steel thimbles, shackles and clevis fittings are commonly protected by hot-dip galvanizing for outdoor service. Coating requirements must be stated in the purchase specification and verified using the agreed inspection method.

Applications

  • Overhead distribution and transmission lines
  • Conductor termination at dead-end poles
  • Tension and strain structures
  • Angle poles and line-deviation points
  • Substation incoming and outgoing conductor connections
  • Primary, secondary and neutral conductor terminations
  • Utility-line construction and network-upgrade projects

Selection Requirements

Please confirm all of the following before selecting a preformed dead-end clamp:

  • Complete conductor designation
  • Conductor material and strand construction
  • Actual conductor outside diameter
  • Right-hand or left-hand outer strand lay
  • Conductor rated tensile strength
  • Required termination holding strength
  • Span, line angle and mechanical loading conditions
  • Required thimble and connection-fitting dimensions
  • Environmental and corrosion conditions

Installation Guidance

  1. Verify that the product model matches the conductor designation, diameter and lay direction.
  2. Inspect the conductor and preformed rods for damage, deformation or contamination.
  3. Mark the installation position according to the supplied instructions.
  4. Place the conductor in the thimble or connection-loop area as specified.
  5. Apply the first section of the preformed rods evenly around the conductor.
  6. Wrap the remaining rod legs in their natural helical direction without forcing or crossing them.
  7. Confirm that all rod ends are aligned and fully seated.
  8. Connect the assembly to the approved clevis, shackle or insulator-string hardware.
  9. Check all bolts, nuts and locking pins before applying full line tension.

Do not hammer, cut, straighten or modify the preformed rods during installation. Removed products should not be reused unless reuse is expressly permitted by the manufacturer for the exact model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one dead-end clamp fit several conductor sizes?

Normally no. The helical diameter and gripping characteristics are designed for a specified conductor or a tightly controlled diameter range. The exact conductor must be confirmed before ordering.

Does installation require hydraulic crimping?

No. The helical rods are wrapped around the conductor manually. Specialized live-line tools may still be required for energized or hot-stick installation.

Can the preformed rods be cut when they are too long?

No. Cutting or modifying the rods can change the gripping length and mechanical performance. Use the correct product model.

Is the connecting clevis included?

It may be included or supplied separately. The quotation, drawing and packing list must clearly state the supply scope.

Is it suitable for insulated conductors?

The product shown is intended as a bare-conductor configuration. Insulated or covered conductors require a model specifically designed for their insulation material, diameter and mechanical characteristics.
