Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Crossarm for Overhead Distribution Poles

The hot-dip galvanized steel crossarm provides a rigid mounting platform for insulators and pole-line hardware on overhead distribution poles. Manufactured from angle steel, formed steel sections or welded assemblies, it is available with customized length, section size, hole pattern, mounting plates and reinforcement brackets. Each crossarm can be produced according to the approved utility drawing and project-specific mechanical requirements.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Crossarm for Overhead Distribution Poles

The hot-dip galvanized steel crossarm is a structural pole-line component used to support insulators, conductors and associated line hardware on overhead distribution poles. It provides the required spacing and mechanical support for the conductor arrangement specified by the utility or project design.

Crossarms can be manufactured from angle steel, channel sections, flat steel or formed steel profiles. Depending on the design, reinforcing brackets, mounting plates, welded supports and project-specific hole patterns can be incorporated into the assembly.

The product is fabricated according to the approved drawing and then hot-dip galvanized to provide corrosion protection for outdoor service. Length, section dimensions, steel thickness, hole diameter, hole spacing and bracket configuration can be customized for different pole structures and voltage classes.

Important: Crossarm dimensions and mechanical capacity cannot be determined from the product photograph alone. The selected product must be verified against the pole-loading calculation, conductor arrangement, insulator type and approved construction drawing.

Available Crossarm Configurations

Angle-Steel Crossarm

Angle-steel crossarms provide a simple and rigid mounting structure for common distribution-line insulators and pole hardware. The angle size, length and hole arrangement can be produced according to the utility drawing.

Reinforced Steel Crossarm

Reinforced versions incorporate welded brackets, gussets or supporting plates where additional stiffness or a project-specific mounting arrangement is required.

Custom Pole-Top Assembly

Crossarms can also be supplied as part of a fabricated pole-top assembly with mounting plates, braces and compatible fasteners. The complete supply scope must be stated in the quotation and packing list.

Materials and Manufacturing

The crossarm is normally produced from carbon structural steel selected according to the required mechanical performance. Manufacturing processes may include cutting, punching, drilling, bending, welding, deburring and dimensional inspection.

All edges and mounting holes should be free from harmful burrs. Welded areas should be inspected for cracks, incomplete fusion, excessive spatter and dimensional distortion before galvanizing.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Surface

After fabrication, the steel crossarm is hot-dip galvanized to provide a protective zinc coating. Coating requirements can be specified according to ISO 1461, ASTM A123/A123M or the applicable utility specification.

When bolts, nuts and washers are supplied with the crossarm, their coating requirements should be specified separately because small hardware may be galvanized under a different applicable standard.

The minimum coating thickness, test method, appearance requirements and permissible repair areas must be agreed before production.

Applications

  • Overhead distribution-line poles
  • Wood, concrete and steel utility poles
  • Pin-insulator and post-insulator mounting
  • Conductor-support and conductor-spacing structures
  • Rural electrification projects
  • Distribution-network construction and rehabilitation
  • Utility and infrastructure pole-top assemblies

Installation Considerations

  1. Verify the crossarm model and hole pattern against the approved pole assembly drawing.
  2. Inspect the crossarm for deformation, damaged coating or blocked mounting holes.
  3. Confirm the pole condition and the correct installation position.
  4. Use bolts, washers and locking components of the specified dimensions and strength class.
  5. Install insulators and associated fittings in the specified hole positions.
  6. Tighten all fasteners according to the approved installation procedure.
  7. Repair minor coating damage using an approved zinc-rich repair method when permitted.
  8. Complete the required dimensional and mechanical inspection before energization.

Quality Inspection

  • Steel material and certificate verification
  • Overall length, profile and thickness inspection
  • Hole diameter and center-distance inspection
  • Straightness and dimensional-tolerance inspection
  • Weld appearance and reinforcement inspection
  • Galvanized-coating appearance and thickness inspection
  • Trial assembly or fitting inspection when required
  • Mechanical testing according to the agreed specification
  • Marking, quantity and packaging inspection

Reference Standards

  • ISO 1461:2022 – Hot-dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles
  • ASTM A123/A123M-24 – Zinc coatings on fabricated iron and steel products
  • ASTM A153/A153M-23 – Zinc coating on iron and steel hardware, when applicable to supplied fasteners
  • Applicable utility drawings and project specifications

Reference to a standard does not constitute certification. Compliance must be supported by inspection records or test documentation for the supplied product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the hole pattern be customized?

Yes. Hole quantity, diameter and center spacing can be manufactured according to the approved utility or project drawing.

Are mounting bolts included?

Bolts and other mounting hardware may be included or supplied separately. The exact supply scope must be confirmed in the quotation and packing list.

Can one crossarm design be used on every pole?

No. Pole diameter, pole material, conductor arrangement, insulator type and mechanical loading must be considered when selecting the crossarm.

What load can the crossarm withstand?

The mechanical capacity depends on the steel grade, section size, thickness, length, hole arrangement, welding and load direction. A rated value should only be published when supported by an approved drawing and mechanical test report.

Can the galvanized coating be inspected?

Yes. Coating appearance, thickness and adhesion-related requirements can be inspected according to the agreed galvanizing standard and purchasing specification.
