NX Type Hot-Dip Galvanized Wedge Strain Clamp for Guy Wire

The NX type wedge strain clamp is designed for anchoring galvanized steel strand and guy wire in overhead distribution and pole-line systems. Its tapered wedge structure produces a secure mechanical grip as tensile force increases. The clamp is manufactured from galvanized ferrous components and is available in NX-1, NX-2, NX-3 and NX-4 configurations for different strand diameters and mechanical requirements.

NX Type Hot-Dip Galvanized Wedge Strain Clamp

The NX type wedge strain clamp is a mechanical anchoring fitting used to terminate galvanized steel strand, guy wire and compatible pole-line stay wire. It is commonly installed in utility-pole guying systems, overhead distribution lines and telecommunications infrastructure.

The clamp uses a tapered body and matching wedge. When the strand is placed in the clamping groove and tension is applied, the wedge is drawn further into the body, increasing the gripping force without requiring conductor compression.

NX-1, NX-2, NX-3 and NX-4 models are available for different steel-strand diameters, connection dimensions and mechanical loads. The exact model must be selected according to the approved construction drawing and required holding strength.

Important: The standard NX wedge clamp is normally intended for galvanized steel strand or guy wire. It must not be used directly on aluminium conductors, ACSR or insulated conductors unless the exact clamp model has been specifically designed and tested for that application.

The model options above do not indicate that every size is held in stock. Applicable strand diameter, dimensions and mechanical rating must be confirmed using the approved product drawing.

Working Principle

The steel strand is positioned inside the groove of the clamp body. The matching wedge is then inserted around or against the strand according to the installation design. As the guy wire is tensioned, the wedge moves into the tapered body and develops a progressively stronger grip.

The wedge and body must be supplied as a matched assembly. Components from different manufacturers, models or production sizes should not be mixed.

Applications

  • Overhead distribution-line guy wires
  • Utility-pole stay-wire systems
  • Telecommunications-pole guying
  • Galvanized steel-strand dead ends
  • Rural electrification projects
  • Substation and infrastructure support systems

Installation Guidelines

  1. Confirm the actual strand diameter and required mechanical load.
  2. Select the corresponding NX clamp model.
  3. Inspect the body and wedge for cracks, deformation or coating damage.
  4. Clean mud, grease and loose particles from the clamping surfaces.
  5. Position the strand correctly in the internal groove.
  6. Insert the matched wedge in the specified direction.
  7. Apply tension gradually and verify that the strand is seated evenly.
  8. Connect the clamp to the guy attachment using the approved hardware.
  9. Inspect the complete assembly after the initial loading operation.

Installation must follow the utility drawing and project specification. Do not grind or modify the wedge to accommodate an incorrect strand diameter.

Quality Inspection

  • Material and dimensional inspection
  • Body and wedge matching inspection
  • Visual inspection for casting cracks, sharp edges and deformation
  • Internal clamping-groove inspection
  • Hot-dip galvanized coating inspection
  • Assembly and connection-hardware inspection
  • Slip or holding-strength test when specified
  • Mechanical failure-load test according to the agreed test plan

Reference Standards

  • IEC 61284 – Requirements and tests for overhead-line fittings, when applicable to the project
  • ISO 1461 – Hot-dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles
  • Applicable utility specifications and approved construction drawings

Reference to a standard does not constitute certification. Any compliance or mechanical-performance claim must be supported by documentation for the exact clamp model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this clamp suitable for aluminium conductor?

The standard NX wedge clamp is normally designed for galvanized steel strand or guy wire. Aluminium conductor and ACSR require a compatible conductor strain clamp selected for their material and construction.

Does the clamp require a hydraulic press?

No. The strand is secured through the mechanical action of the tapered wedge. Correct seating and tensioning are still essential.

Can the wedge be reused?

A removed wedge may only be reused after inspection confirms that the body, groove, coating and wedge have not been worn, cracked or deformed. Follow the project maintenance specification.

How is the correct NX model selected?

Selection must be based on strand diameter, strand construction, required holding strength and connection dimensions. The model number alone is insufficient without the corresponding drawing.
