Aluminum Alloy Stockbridge Damper for 220kV & 500kV OPGW Cables – Wind Resistant Design

This Stockbridge-type damper is engineered to mitigate aeolian vibrations in OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) cables, which are high-frequency, low-amplitude oscillations caused by wind vortex shedding. These vibrations can lead to fatigue damage at suspension points and within the cable itself, potentially harming the fragile optical fibers inside.

The damper operates on a dynamic energy absorption principle. When the cable vibrates, the hammer heads move out of phase, creating internal friction within the connecting steel strand and air damping that dissipates vibrational energy as heat. A multi-frequency design ensures effective vibration suppression across a broad frequency range (typically from 6Hz to 150Hz).

For OPGW applications, the damper often features an aluminum alloy line clip to prevent galvanic corrosion and ensure a secure, non-damaging grip on the cable. This design is crucial for the demanding environments of 220kV and 500kV transmission networks, including long-span crossings and areas with high wind exposure.
